This week we will observe our nation’s Independence Day. Celebrate with us as we showcase the positive impact that our grantee, America Scores New York, is making on the lives of NYC youth.
America SCORES New York works across 18 schools in Harlem, Washington Heights, the Bronx and Flatbush, where 1 in 3 youth lives on or below the poverty line and school performance is in the bottom 20% in all of NYC. America SCORES New York (ASNY) uniquely provides year-round programs to more than 750 children every year, during important peak times for risky behavior: after-school hours and during school breaks.
ASNY is a combined soccer, literacy and service-learning program for children ages 5-18 in under-resourced NYC communities. Each year, the program engages 750 youth and 60 teachers for 60 hours of poetry, service-learning and financial literacy workshops, 120 hours of soccer and health lessons, 20 community service projects and 10 special events.
ASNY serves as a driving force in promoting sportsmanship, self-expression, commitment and teamwork for youth in under-resourced communities in New York City. Its unique after-school program shines a spotlight on its poet-athletes, helping them develop the skills necessary to lead successful lives off the field and outside the classroom.
Instead of exposure to troublesome influences and participation in negative activities, ASNY engages youth with soccer, poetry and community service projects. ASNY fills a void in the lives of underserved children, helping to curb juvenile violence and drug use. For the past 17 years, ASNY has mentored thousands of at-risk students, allowing them to gain self-confidence, increase academic engagement, develop healthy habits and make positive personal and social decisions to help them productively navigate life’s challenges.
The John A. Reisenbach Foundation helps support ASNY’s Literacy In Action program, which consists of 5 days per week of after-school soccer practices, writing workshops and soccer games.
