JAR is a proud supporter of The New York Foundling’s CAPP (Child Abuse Prevention Program). CAPP creates safe spaces in which to inform, educate, and engage with children, school staff, and parents on abuse. CAPP uses life-sized puppets in skits to teach children how to recognize, resist, and report physical and sexual abuse – educating them about their right to a safe childhood.
Since its inception, the program has served over 590,000 students. Over the course of this last school year (2018-2019), CAPP has presented 169 Child Safety Workshops to 14,640 students in 113 New York City Schools. The program’s success is unmatched: 567 students stayed to speak to their prevention specialists or CAPP-trained school counselors, 80 of whom disclosed incidents serious enough to report to the NY State Central Registry. CAPP has hosted 16 Positive Parenting Workshops, serving 160 parents. CAPP doubled its number of partnerships with “District 75” special education schools, bringing vital child abuse awareness to students with disabilities, a group more likely to be targeted by would-be abusers than the general population.
Following a CAPP Child Safety Workshop, a student reported that when her father was angry, he would often hit her with a belt, leaving long purple bruises down her back. After a report to the State Central Registry, a caseworker visited her house and talked to her father about other methods of behavior management. When a school counselor followed up with her, A.L., smiled, saying that since her father had changed his ways, and “I am good with both my mom and my dad.”
