Hey Reisenbach Friends!
On Wednesday, we posted a message from our executive director, Naomi, about the start of our Summer in a Safe City (#NYCSafeSummer) campaign. Each Friday throughout the month of July, we’ll be sharing different exciting, safe, and rewarding events across the all five boroughs of New York City happening that exact week. These updates will include fun activities and volunteer opportunities, as well as resources from our grantees and other nonprofits that could be useful for you or anyone that you know.
We hope that we are keeping your week packed with plenty of great suggestions. Have anything you think other people may be interested in? Email me with recommendations: chinue.foreman@reisenbachfoundation-2018.mystagingwebsite.com
Kickin’ It Back,

(PS: Happy Fourth of July!)
Saturday (July 4th):
— NYC’s Parks and Recreation (vote Leslie Knope for President 2016!) department will be having their “It’s My Park!” volunteer opportunity at Henry Hudson Park in the Bronx. The event will be from 8 AM – 12 PM. Start your Independence Day by helping to sustain and amplify the beauty of Henry Hudson Park. In the words of President Theodore Roosevelt, “It was here that the romance of my life began”– makes someone’s romance with nature start with the beauty of Henry Hudson Park.
— The ever famous Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog eating contest will be happening on Coney Island (starting at 10 AM and lasting till 1 PM — wow that’s a lot of hot dogs to watch someone eat!).
Sunday (July 5th):
— Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Inc. (a nonprofit food rescue organization based in New York City that provides solutions to prevent excess wholesome cuisine from being wasted) will be hosting a volunteer opportunity to help feed leftover bagels to someone in need. The event will be only 20 minutes and will finish at the Bowery Mission at 227 Bowery. The event is from 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM. Link is here to register: http://bit.ly/1HAIWqW.
— “Thought is free”. Know where this quote is from? You don’t? Well it’s from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. This Sunday is Shakespeare in the Park’s last showing of the The Tempest. It’s going to be at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park at 8 PM. Not only is thought free, but so is this play! (sidenote: get your tickets early before someone else takes them!)
— Plays aren’t your thing? Well MoMA will be hosting the first of its Summergarden series in the Sculpture Garden. This installment will be members of the New Juilliard Ensemble for Mixed Ensembles. This event will be at 8 PM.
Monday (July 6th):
— The Food Bank for New York City will be needing volunteers to feed a hot meal for the hungry in West Harlem. You’ll be helping 500 stomachs be full by the end of the night. The event starts at 3:30 PM. Link is here to register to help out: http://bit.ly/1KA6GfU. (Minimum age is 18+). Can’t make it then? The Food Bank is constantly looking for volunteers for various opportunities: http://bit.ly/1if40rP.
— Rooftop Films Festival (yes! the title is not misleading. They hold outdoor movies on rooftops!) will be screening the original Terminator at Coney Island (OK this is a little misleading, it’s actually outside on the beach!). Link is here: http://bit.ly/1T9IzHX.
Tuesday (July 7th):
— Want to help your kids volunteer for something this summer? Want them to experience real nature? NYC Parks and Recreation will be hosting their volunteer opportunity for kids called “Garden Crew: Kids”. The event helps care of the vegetable beds (where all of the produce will be donated to local food pantries and sold at the Youth Run Farm Stand). The event will be hosted at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx from 10 AM – 1 PM. Register at (718)-601-1553.
— Enjoy a fun-filled night with the family by watching The Iron Giant in the Rockaways. It’s located at Beach 17th Street and Seagirt Boulevard in Rockaway Beach. The event starts at 8 PM and lasts till 10:30 PM. Don’t forget to bring tissues; that movie still brings us to tears.
Wednesday (July 8th):
— Interested in Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and want to learn more? They’ll be hosting their volunteer orientation at 111 John St, 23rd Floor. New York, New York 10038. Register here first!: https://habitatnyc.org/index.php/volunteer.
Thursday (July 9th):
— Missed Annie (2014) while it was in theaters? Or are you just really obsessed with Quevenzhané’s cuteness or Jamie Foxx’s voice? Come see Annie (2014) at St. James Recreation Center in St. James Park! From 8:30 PM to 10 PM, you can sing “It’s a hard knock life” to your heart’s content.
