Today, for our fifth installment in our Summer in a Safe City Campaign (#NYCSafeSummer), we want to introduce you all to another one of our grantees, the Internationals Network for Public Schools (“Internationals”), an amazing organization that is changing education in New York and across the nation with one student at a time.
Internationals is recognized as a leader in the field of English language learner education in the United States. This organization provides a quality educational experience for recently arrived immigrant adolescents by growing and sustaining a strong national network of International High Schools.
Across all five boroughs, Internationals has 12 schools. The average student at International High Schools has been in the United States for approximately four years or less and on average score within the bottom quartile on English language tests at the time of admissions. According to the statistics conducted by the organization, in the School Year 2011-12, students came from over 119 countries, speak over 90 languages, and their English language skills vary on an individual level.1
Our grant to Internationals helps three critical programs for the Internationals educators to develop the necessary skills and expertise to attend to the needs of English-language learner students. These skills are essential for educating the students to be able to learn English while simultaneously following the rigorous New York State based curriculum for high school students. With little to no English language skills, these students are at-risk for unemployment and poverty. Internationals helps these students to succeed beyond expectation.
Your donation to our Summer in a Safe City Campaign will fund the training and support for the Internationals teachers. As the children are enjoying their summers in the city, the teachers are dedicating portions of their summer to learn more innovative and cutting edge education techniques that cater to English language learners. These workshops also occur throughout the year — which demonstrates Internationals educators’ dedication to providing an impactful education experience for these students.
