On May 9th, The Reisenbach Foundation partnered with John Jay College of Criminal Justice to host a pair of panel discussions titled, “Gun Violence in New York City: Complementary Solutions from Law Enforcement and Public Health.” The event was attended by faculty, staff, students, and practitioners from law enforcement and public health fields.
The event consisted of two panels, one focusing on law enforcement solutions and the other on public health solutions. Reisenbach grantees The New York City Police Foundation and The POINT CDC both were both represented. Executive Managing Director of The POINT, Danny Peralta, spoke about how his organization works with youth to provide a safe space in the Hunt’s Point section of The Bronx. Youth are exposed to the arts and community service in a neighborhood, where violence and poverty are commonplace. In addition to Danny, we also had Gregg Roberts, Executive Director of The New York City Police Foundation and Lt. Marc Moreno of the NYPD Crime Stoppers Unit to discuss how the NYPD has worked in communities to combat gun violence.
The panel proved very enlightening, as it touched on many issues that the audience were not aware of. For example, at The POINT Danny teaches students the importance of managing their social media as not to insight conflict and to prepare for their future careers. Gregg and Lt. Moreno discussed how the NYPD collects information about crime and neighborhoods to foster positive relationships within neighborhoods, with tools such as an app to rate interactions with police officers.
Finally, we were pleased to have Reisenbach Foundation Chairman Gerry Byrne provide the luncheon remarks. Gerry spoke about the importance of service, and maintaining safety and quality of life for New Yorkers.
We would like to say thank you to our partners at John Jay College for working with us to facilitate such great discussions. We look forward to hosting events like these in the future.
