Union Settlement is a community organization that serves the needs of residents in East Harlem of all ages. The organization offers a myriad of education, wellness, and community-building programs that serve about 10,000 people per year. Union Settlement’s Youth Services program helps children, adolescents, and young adults to realize their full potential. For example, the Advocacy, Intervene, Mentor program provides intensive mentoring, counseling, case management, home visits, and life skills development to 10 to 15 youth who are on probation. Also, Union Settlement offers educational, vocational, and support services to youth between the ages of 16 – 24 who have left/been pushed out of school and are struggling in the job market. This September, Union Settlement is hosting a Stop the Violence Community Day that will target youth who participate in their programs as well as other youth in East Harlem. The event will be infused with positive messaging and offer activities that promote alternatives to violence. The main feature of the event will be a basketball tournament with 12 – 16 teams. Local performing arts groups will also be able to display their talents during the day.`
