Safe Summer – Women in Need (WIN)

Women in Need (WIN) is an organization that transforms the lives of New York City homeless women and their children by providing a comprehensive solution of safe housing, critical services and ground-breaking programs they need to succeed on their own. WIN provides safe, clean and private transitional housing for families, as well as long term supportive housing with intensive one-to-one case management, to break the cycle of homelessness for New York City women and their children.  About 60% of WIN’s clients are women.  One program that has been successful in helping WIN to achieve their mission is the Income Building Program.  This program offers employment counseling, employment retention workshops, interview preparation, mock interviews, GED preparation, resume writing assistance, job fairs, computer skills training, and much more. WIN partners with employers, job training and placement specialists, and volunteer organizations to increase client employment gains and maximize household income. Win also provides adult clients with access to computer labs onsite at Win shelters, as well as computer training, and a professional closet from which clients can obtain interview- and work-appropriate attire. In FY15, their clients achieved a total of 932 employment gains. As of December 31, 2015, they have already achieved 1,207 employment gains for nearly 700 adult Win clients.  WIN is currently in the process of expanding this program by creating an identical program tailored to young adults.  This new program would include youth-oriented career workshops and job fairs for clients with little to no prior work experience.
